Jasper spent much of his childhood and teenage years in the presence of Pearce Lockheed . While originally he was only meant to be a teacher the man had wound up becoming so much more than that to the young Prince. While of course he loved and respected his father King Harlan was hardly interested his childrens personal lives. He was more concerned making sure his heir was training properly. That he was studying, practicing, and moving steadily on his way to being the next King. Their relationship has never been the emotional sort. Pearce had been the one to wipe his tears. To encourage him out of his shell when he felt too shy to speak. To ease his mind when things felt too hard, too scary, too frustrating. He'd also been the first person Jasper had come out to when he realized his distinct lack of interest in the opposite sex. Even when he'd gone to study abroad the Prince had sent letters to the Viscount often. Far more often than he sent home to his father. Just to let him know about his travels, interesting things he'd seen, foods he'd eaten, people he'd met. The man had become more than just a mentor to the Prince he was a sort of father figure and a very dear friend to him. So Jasper saw no problem in deciding to leave the palace and drop by Brighthollow Manor entirely unannounced. With him was a single personal guard and his carriage driver. He didn't feel the need to have a huge entourage with him to simply stop by to speak to a friend. Even if technically he was here on official business. After passing through the guards there was one that moved to the main house ahead of them to tell a servant to inform the head of the house the Prince had arrived to speak with him. By he stepped out and reached the front door he was greeted by an older woman with a small smile. "Your Highness, please do come in." Jasper smiled at the woman as he stepped inside the familiar estate. "Master Lockheed will be with you in just a moment, please follow me to the sitting room." He thanked the woman quietly before following after her to one of the more brightly lit sitting rooms and took a seat on the couch. There was another servant who entered a bit later with tea and some small snacks to set on the table.

Pearce had never thought of himself as a mentor. Never imagined he would be tasked with molding young minds, let alone that of the hier apparent himself, Prince Jasper Rost. He had never suspected that his personal quest for knowledge would call attention to him for the king to entrust that in him. Well, it probably had more to do with his mother serving as a diplomat for years before her death.
At first, he had been uncertain of teaching a royal. The boy had been intimidating to the Viscount, even as shy as he had been. But the two had come to teach each other a lot. Not just about language and history and culture, but about emotions and being one's self. When Jasper came to him with his deepest and most heartfelt concerns, the man had felt honor that he could be that support for the young man that he had never had himself. Pearce was more than fond of the young man and considered him almost like the son he had never had. Not that he would dare confess as much anywhere that might get back to the King. That sort of sentiment was not the least bit proper.
Their latest exchange of letters had ended abruptly when the young man returned home. Pearce had been visiting a few friends in Farvald and had missed all of the commotion at the man's return but had hoped to see him eventually. Lounging in the library with his nose in a book and a cup of tea at his elbow, he had not been expecting to hear there was royalty awaiting him in his sitting room. He thanked Todd and pushed himself up, dusting himself off and carefully marking marking his place in the tome and setting it aside.
He knew before he made it down the stairs who was in his sitting room. Even still, he paused around the corner of the open doors to run his hands through his hair and straighten his collar and lapel. Pearce offered a nervous smile and nod to the Prince's Red Guard and rounded the entryway into the green room.
"Your Royal Highness," he greeted, this smile a lot easier even as he bowed at the waist. Near privacy or not, knowing Jasper's dislike of formality, Pearce couldn't help himself. But he didn't kneel, and he looked back up at the young man who seemed to have grown since the last time they saw each other. "Your travels seem to have done you well."

A bright smile crossed the Prince's usually stoic features when his old mentor entered the room. Just as much as the man wouldn't openly say he saw Jasper as a sort of son he would never say he saw the man as a kind of second father. That would be inappropriate at best. But he was always happy to call the man one of his nearest and dearest friends. Someone the Prince trusted explicitly. Though as he greeted him with such a formal title and bowed the younger man rolled his eyes. "Pearce, please." He said with a small chuckle as he stepped closer.
Jasper opened his arms for a hug but didn't immediately wrap his arms around the man. It was bad enough he was just dropping by his house without so much as a letter to announce his arrival. Granted the last time Pearce really saw him the Prince was only about twenty years old. Six years would change a lot about a person. "How do you like my hair?" He asked with a playful grin. His wild wavy blonde locks hung down aroud his face now with one side tucked behind his ear to keep most of it out of his eyes. "I'm really enjoying the long look."

It was good to see the young man after such a long time. It might have been six years apart but it felt like longer and shorter all at once. "It is so very good to see you," he continued, as if not hearing the man chide him for his formality. He couldn't help it. Maybe it was simply something that helped calm his nerves but maybe it was his worry that more than just the man's physical appearance had changed. What if he was here on formal business? Or had decided he wanted more distance? Pearce didn't want to overstep or assume.
The Viscount would also never presume to hug a member of the royal family. But nor would he deny the man what he so clearly wanted. Needed. He spread his hands to his sides and stepped forward, bracing himself a little and allowing the young man to hug him. He let Jasper wrap hi arms around him first, forcing a calming breath. Even knowing and trusting Jasper, hugs were a lot sometimes.
Six years had changed a lot and changed nothing at all. Pearce was still without any children of his own. He was arguably more nervous. There were flecks of silver in his hair at his temples he pretended weren't there and he was a bit slimmer. Unlike Jasper who had finally put some muscle on his tall frame and grown about his hair. "It suits you," he agreed, stepping back slightly. It was perhaps a bit more rugged and less clean cut but the young man did look dashing. "I gather you really enjoyed Taknier?" He had a lot of questions. But none that were pressing, even the one he had not dared to ask by mail in six years.

It felt good hugging Pearce. The Prince deep down was a very affectionate man. Perhaps due to not getting much physical affection from his parents or nannies growing up, but that wasn't something he liked to think about. He loved being affectionate with those he was close with nonetheless but he also realized anyone not related to him wouldn't be as inclined to openly touch royalty without permission. It was most likely to lead to the loss of a limb. Still, Jasper let him go as the Viscount pulled away and took a small step back. He also was aware enough to know that the older man wasn't as comfortable with lots of physical contact. But six years apart he felt earned at least one hug.
When he stated that the hair suited him Jasper couldn't help but smile. "I enjoyed my travels quite a bit." He stated with a nod before he turned to the couches again. "Shall we sit down?" He asked as he motioned to the tea and snacks that had been set out. The Prince wasn't particularly hungry but the tea was nice. "How have things been here? Is your family well?" He meant more than just Pearce and his wife. Though he was tempted to ask if the man had thought about any children. Given he also knew the man shared his disinterest in the opposite sex. Not that the Prince didn't think he had a very pretty wife but he also sympathized with how producing an heir would be....difficult.
"I actually came by to ask a favor of you." And Jasper would hold true that it was a favor, not an order. If Pearce really didn't want to go with him he wouldn't force the man. There were other diplomats he could bring along but one he trusted the way he trusted his old mentor.

Pearce would owe the young man any number of hugs he wanted. In private. And he reserved the right to hesitate sometimes. But admittedly it did feel good. The Viscount was uncomfortable with most forms of physical contact, which was unfortunate for how much he craved amd desired to give affection. Just another thing he blamed his father for.
He nodded and moved to sit in an armchair across from Jasper. A servant appeared at his arm to pour a fresh steaming cup of tea. Soft porcelain clicks filled the room for a moment as Pearce picked up the cup and saucer. "Much the same," he said, trying to figure out how to explain. "Persephone is still looking for a suitor and Tobi and I are st-still childless," he said with an awkward but unapologetic shrug. He supposed he was setting a poor example. Certainly he was allowed to like men. He simply wasn't allowed to do anything about it. In fact he wasn't allowed not to have a family with a woman. Going through all the trouble to marry had bee more about appearances and taking care of his dead lover's sister. Children...in over forty years, Pearce still found the topic frustratingn and anxiety inducing. Every time Tobi brought it up he panicked.
Yet Pearce would encouraging the Prince to do what he could not, even if that made him a hypocrite. Being monarch was different.
"A f-favor from me? You know I am at your d-disposal, my Prince. What could I p-possibly do for you?" He meant it seriously but the way he spoke was familiar enough to indicate he was being a bit playful. He couldn't begin to fathom though what Jasper would need from him. Was this something personal? Or official? Was he in trouble? Pearce tried not to jump to conclusions and instead took another sip of his tea.

Jasper realized that his need for an heir was more prevalent than the Viscount. Not that he didn't also need an heir to take over his estate once he passed. Which wasn't something the Prince liked thinking about. It was bad enough he still had yet to marry the woman he was betrothed to. But he was trying his best to put that off as long as possible. Even if it was just postponing the inevitable. Despite everything he really did want children it was just the issue of not wanting to have sex with a woman.
Hearing that Pearce was at his disposal made Jasper chuckle softly. "You know I'd never force you into anything." He said more sincerely. The Viscount meant more to him than just some tool to be used. With a soft sigh he took a drink from his own tea and waited for the room to be empty again before he turned to the man. The Prince would prefer this remained as private a conversation as possible. "I plan on going to speak with the Lutrians and I wanted you to join me as my diplomat." He stated plainly at first. It wouldn't be the first time the man had traveled with him but that had been ages ago when the Prince was just a boy. And this wasn't traveling to some cozy inn with soft beds and warm fireplaces.
While he realized Pearce was a very anxious man he also recognized him as intelligent, kind, and he trusted the mans opinion and advice. "I only ask because you know how much I trust your advice." And it would be calming for him to have someone with him that was so close to him. "And we haven't traveled together in ages." He said a bit more playfully with a small smile.

The Viscount was well aware of how honorable and responsible the Prince was. He was as good as his word. But more than that, Pearce knew him for the friend he had become. They both knew each other well enough to understand strengths and weaknesses, joys and discomforts.
It did not go unnoticed that Jasper waited for Pearce's staff to quit the room. He raised a concerned and intrigued eyebrow before the man even began speaking. "A d-diplomatic mission?" He breathed, clearly finding the idea confusing. Not that he thought the Lutrians entirely brutes but certainly they didn't seem the talking sort!
"Jasper...I am no, no, no diplomat. I believe you have me confused with my late mother..." He said, trying to awkwardly laugh the idea off. Wouldn't that be dangerous? What if they tried to attack them? To kill the Prince? He'd have to bring a whole army, which of course, was asked for a fight. "I-" he trailed off as the other man continued.
Pearce nodded eventually. "You make good p-p-points, but that does not mmmmean I like the idea." Of course he hadn't said no exactly, had he? "Is your father aware of th-this? What do you hope to gain from sp-speaking to them?" He said, asking somewhat better questions.

Jasper was more than aware that being a diplomat wasn't necessarily in Pearce's job description but he did trust the man knew what he was doing. And it wasn't as if he hadn't thought of the dangers that it could be to go. But that was why they had guards. And the Prince himself was no stranger to a battle. Hearing the man properly say his name though as opposed to his title made him rub his hands together a bit nervously. Not that he had anything to be worried about. Other than stressing his friend.
"I knew you wouldn't like it." He muttered with a soft laugh as he took another drink of his tea. But it never hurt to ask. "My father is aware of this, he would have gone himself but they have not asked for him and sending the King unannounced could be perceived the wrong way." He explained with a small shrug. "He also has other things he needs to worry about here and pulling him away would be unwise." The question on what he planned to gain made him set his cup down with a soft clink against the saucer.
"There are concerns that they're getting close to attacking our farms which would be detrimental also it would only be a matter of time before they got into the cities." He explained a bit more seriously as he rubbed his hand up and down his forearm. "This is just going to see what it is they want, certainly they can't be attacking just for fun." He sighed and brushed more hair behind his ear. If he was being honest he doubted even if they found out what it was the Lutrians wanted his father would be willing to just give it to them.

It wasn't often he used the Prince's name so familiarly but he did sometimes. Especially if he felt comfortable enough depending on where they were and what they spoke about. Certainly he had gotten the man to call him by his own first name and that was only fair.
"Of course I d-do not like it," he confirmed. "But it is a better idea than charging into a fight head first." Not that he doubted that was what the King wanted anyway. Admittedly, Jasper's reasons were sound. But Pearce was concerned that none of it mattered. Only he wasn't certain how to phrase that, if at all. "I am g-glad to see the king granting you more responsibly." That seemed a safer track.
Pearce nodded further, taking another breath and another drink. He was worried himself. Not so much about these casual invasions moving further south, but certainly about all the innocent people caught up in it. These were farms and villages, not military outposts being targeted. A diplomatic envoy was a step. "I certainly hope it is not for fun," he agreed softly, distracted. "From my understanding, they used to migrate much more frequently in the north. Perhaps they have a problem more with those farms encroaching on their territory than with us."

Jasper agreed that him going was better than charging head first into a battle. Especially if it could be otherwise resolved. If they could limit the losses on their side that's what the Prince would prefer. But there was a part of him that still worried even going out there they would still lead to a war. Still, hiding behind pessimism hardly got anyone anywhere.
Saying his father was giving him more responsibility was indeed a nice way to put it. While it was still traveling going on a diplomatic mission hardly led to his leisure. Though he supposed he was still learning something. But Jasper wanted to do what he could. It wasn't as if they were attacking military outposts or even treasuries. These were innocent farmers. Families with young children who were just trying to live their lives. If their issues were with his father then they shouldn't take it out on innocent people.
"As far as I was aware they were a nomadic people, I never imagined them to be the territorial sort." But he supposed he couldn't blame them. Expanding their territory left little for them to roam. Or perhaps they were wanting to settle? Jasper wasn't sure. But that was the point in going to speak with them. If they would actually talk with him. "You don't need to make a decision right this moment, I still need to get together a guard, a translator, and a few others things before we can head off." He said with a soft sigh.
"But I would really like if you would join me." He offered him a soft, charming smile as he leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees.

The Viscount always preferred to find the 'nice' way of saying something. There was not always a good way to say something but Pearce would do his best to find it. If one had nothing nice to say, and all that. He supposed Jasper could think of it as just another trip but the young man seemed a bit more focused than when he discussed returning to Taknier to sightsee and explore and discover some part of the larger world. Not that Pearce had blamed him, the older man was quite a travel enthusiasts himself. Being in charge of the estate and house politics made that more difficult and since the assassination, somewhat more stressful.
"It is an...curious turn," he agreed. What might cause them to settle he wasn't sure. As far as he knew, the King had not forbid them from traveling through Manthiran claimed lands. Perhaps the herds weren't moving the same or some new leadership was in place. "Our ancestors were nomads once too, ages ago," he pointed out thoughtfully.
Pearce frowned. He both wanted to say no and to say yes. Felt compelled to help because he had made a blanket statement before knowing anything and was loathe to walk it back. But he knew Jasper wouldn't press him. Still... "...and a diplomat," he added hesitantly, not wanting to impose the request, but by extension giving a soft agreement to join the Prince. Pearce didn't mean to imply Jasper inept, but he certainly wouldn't consider himself one. He was more a historian and teacher than anything. He could certainly offer advice but...
"P-perhaps my sister Persephone could be of assistance?" He had no idea if she was present at the estate or out on the town or even, Light forbid, was on a date. Technically, as head of their house, Pearce should organize suitors and give his blessing in their father's place but the man reckoned he and his siblings had had enough 'well meaning' and overbearing interventions in their lives. She might be considered a social pariah for being unwed at her age, but he would gladly deal with the gossip and their more pushy peers so that his sister could enjoy her life.

"I suppose everyone was nomadic at one point." He said thoughtfully with a small shrug. Every country started from somewhere. People traveling to find safer lands. Following their food until they settled into one place. Could they be struggling with following the herds? Jasper wasn't sure. He was glad Pearce didn't just outright deny him though.
The mention of the Viscounts sister made Jasper cock his head to the side curiously. That's right, she was a diplomat wasn't she? The Prince had interacted with her a fair amount but not as much as he had Pearce himself. "I shall speak with her as well then." He nodded with a small smile. The Prince knew their mother had been a diplomat as well. A very accomplished one.
He leaned down and pulled his cup and saucer back up with a soft sigh. "I am glad to see you again though, Pearce." He said with a warm smile. "It feels like it's been forever since we were last able to just talk."

Pearce imagined the Prince had met his sister but wasn't surprised he had come to him first. They were close after all. While he wasn't certain his little sister had had much practical training, but regardless, she had as good a knack for language and speaking as he did and knew more Lutrian than anyone he knew. Even should the Prince prefer his advice, Persephone could translate.
Pearce grimaced but covered it with another sip of tea. Jasper was right, he could worry about such an expedition later. If he went. He would probably go. Right now, the important bit was simply seeing the young man again. "Far too many years," the Viscount agreed. "Hopefully we shall have...have plenty of time to catch up."
"I heard you might have found your future Queen?" He asked carefully. He wasn't about to press into their relationship, especially knowing the future King would prefer a King Consort. But laws amd tradition had their place and even Jasper could not upend the system without first gaining respect and sway as a leader. But it was also Pearce's way of inquiring if the man had found anyone else on his travels. Notably, he had come alone, but perhaps he had brought a friend from elsewhere. He simply wanted the young man to be happy. And careful.

Jasper had in fact met Pearce's sister. Mostly in passing. She was only a year older than him and at one point there'd been some talk of perhaps having them become betrothed but it had barely been a fleeting moment. The Prince wasn't sure if it was because he'd been young enough at the time that a possible fiancé wasn't necessary at the moment. Or because the Lockheed family wasn't exactly the house his father wanted a stronger loyalty from. Either way it hadn't really mattered.
Jasper truly hoped Pearce would come along with him. Other than just looking for his advise he'd really missed his old friend. "I'm sure we'll have plenty more time to catch up now." He said with a warm smile. Though it was his question on his future queen that dampened his mood a bit. The girl was perfectly nice. She was pretty, intelligent, and the Prince did enjoy her company but....well, she was a woman. It wasn nothing against her personally, this was entirely on the Prince.
"I did." He said in a slightly flatter tone than he'd wanted. "She's a perfectly lovely girl, I bet you'd like her." They both knew Jasper would never be truly happy married to a woman. No matter how well they got along, even if she became his bestfriend, it wouldn't be the same. He also knew if anyone understood that sentiment it would be Pearce. "How are you and Tobi?"
