The scout finished his food before the Prince, despite relearning his utensils. He'd used a fork and knife well enough, even on occasion in Taknier, but especially living in the military outpost, nearly everything in the soldier's mess was finger food. He imagined the officer's mess was fancier sometimes, but he wasn't exactly welcome there. Besides, he didn't want to eat with Farrins glaring at him the entire time. It made his stomach sour.
Hunt settled back, once again forcibly reminding himself to increase his internal temperature. He didn't usually have a problem with maintaining it, but when he was tired, it was different. He ran a hand through his hair, still standing by his choice to avoid any painkilling drugs and also regretting every moment of it. The itching and burning the nurse had mention was making itself more than well know, but otherwise he was once again getting used to it. Hopefully he managed to sleep, between that burning and the strange bed. He briefly contemplated sleep in the chair, but he knew that wouldn't help the rest of him.
He took a whiff of the drink took like he had the medicines and then only took a small sip at first, testing what it was. "I'll be allowed to return to my company in the morning?" He asked, watching the Prince finish his plate. There was an edge of concern in his voice. He worried who they might have lost while he was gone.

Jasper was glad to see Hunt had really enjoyed his food. Though the Prince wasn't so starved to scarf down his food as fast as the scout did. He did eventually finish his food and watched as the man sniffed suspiciously at his drink. "I didn't poison it if that's what you're worried about." He said with a chuckle.
The drink was a warm cider. Fairly alcoholic though not as heavy as the ale from the tavern. There was a slight spice to it and though the drink had cooled a bit it was still warm. Jasper finished his own plate and set it aside before he took a drink from his own cup. "If you're still hungry I could get you some more." He offered as he held his glass with two hands. To feel the warmth on his hands.
His question and the concern in his voice made Jasper give him a worried look. "Of course you can return back to them." He said more sincerely. He understood the worry for the other men. "You really care about your company don't you?" After everything they'd done to him.

Hunt looked up at him at the notion of poison, expression suddenly rather world weary. If he had really been worried about poison, he wouldn't have bothered to try the drink. Or eat any of the food. Worrying about that was a waste of good food he had always thought. "It's the amount of alcohol," he explained instead. He did take another sip, because he did like ciders, but he wasn't much of a social drinker, as the Prince had likely figured out from their visit to the tavern. Still, one drink, provided it wasn't very heavy, he could handle. The warmth the cider provided would have normal felt cozy, but with his raised temperature it was uncomfortable. Still, he liked the taste.
"No thank you," he said. It would be a lie to say he couldn't still eat, but he wasn't starving any longer and he wanted to get some rest in.
Hunt grimaced but allowed himself to shrug. "My scouts," he clarified only slightly. Because someone had to. It might as well be him while he was around. The nurse had that part right. "You know it used to be an honor, scouting duty?" He asked the question like the Prince was unfamiliar with his own military, but that wasn't how he meant it. Because while he probably knew how it used to be, he might not know how it was now. "A reward for services rendered, an easy patrol and recognition, a patch to bring home to loved ones. But now, it's a punishment. Lutrians aren't fielding an army. They roam the countryside. They send their beasts after us. Leave traps. We set up in that village and they know not to hit us. But we don't know where they are, so we send out patrols and scouts and those raiders jump at any chance to hit us and vanish."
Hunt had gotten this very injury from springing a fellow soldier from a trap and wounding himself in the process. It wasn't some glorious fight or death wish. It was just one man trying to help another. It was why he didn't think diplomacy was an option, even if he wanted it desperately.

Jasper had done his own military service. Led his own patrols. Seen battle and stepped in place for his men just so that he knew they would make it home. As far as he was concerned nothing mattered on that field. Not title, not money, not whether one was born in the country or not. Just making sure as many men could make it home to their families as possible.
Hearing how the Lutrians were fighting made his stomach turn. The idea that his soldiers were walking in blindly. That the commanders were sending them in as punishments. That was what made it worse. That these men who were supposed to be leaders were sending their own men into a death trap on purpose. Jasper took a breath to calm himself. He didn't want to lose his temper now.
"I know diplomacy doesn't seem possible." He admitted. Even he could see that. Jasper wasn't under any illusion that this could only end well. "But aren't the lives of those men why its worth a try?" He asked with a bit more passion. "If there's even a sliver of a chance to save the lives of our soldiers I want to take it." He couldn't stand reading more reports of soldiers being lost. Of how they were dying out on the field.
"If nothing else we can at least get some kind of information. What they want, a closer look at what we're dealing with." At the end of the day this wasn't just some one off mission of peace. "These Lutrians can't just be attacking wildly for no reason. If there's something we can do, anything, I want to at least try."

He could tell what he said made the Prince upset. Could tell he was listening. No matter if they declared war or agreed on peace, the northern commanders needed to answer for their actions. Things couldn't go on this way.
Hunt sighed. He knew he couldn't dismiss a potential answer just because he didn't like it. If it worked, then it would of course be worth it, to save those lives. "The sooner this is solved, the better," he said. Hunt didn't just mean the threat of war however but the leadership. "But my real concern with diplomacy is not what we have to gain. It is what we have to loose."
"What information do we give them? Are you willing to cede the land and livelihood of farmers futures to save soldiers now? Are you willing to trade your life and everyone you take with you should it come to that?" Hunt continued. He was. If it came to that.

Jasper agreed that the sooner things were solved the better. Which was why he was trying to get things together as soon as possible. The longer they put things off the more of their men lay dead in the snow. Most of which they couldn't even bring home. How many more women had to become widows? How many more mothers would never get another hug from their sons? How many children had to lose a parent? He would also need to take care of these power hungry bastards who thought they could use soldiers as canon fodder.
Though Hunt made a good point. They did have just as much to lose as they did to gain. Which was a dangerous blade to teeter on. "It is not up to me on what to give the Lutrians." He wasn't yet King. At the end of the day the choice on how things went would be up to his father. There had to be a healthy balance though. Somewhere. On the question on if he was willing to trade his life the Prince's expression hardened.
"My life, yes." His father could have another son. Jasper liked to joke that he didn't have the luxury of being suicidal. "If things go south I will get as many of my men home as I can." He always would.

Hunt had many similar thoughts, tempered by his own forced walls and forced distance. He warned against himself whether he should carr about those who were not his blood, who beat him or ridiculed or raped him. But unfortunately, as much as he wished it, he wasn't a cynic. He cared, he just hated to admit it. Ultimately, he worried he would agree to something stupid on the Prince's behalf. But really he was too self-righteous.
At least the Prince recognized his limitations. Still, Hunt grunted. "We've already lost land and lives to them. They will argue the same. Neither side will settle for cutting their loses," he pointed out. Either Manthir would have to lose more, or the Lutrians would. If they thought their numbers and warriors stood a chance, war made a stupid sort of sense. Unless Manthir cut a deal that wasn't in their own favor. Hunt had no idea of the Prince's policies. But the King had always been very clear. Hit back harder than they hit you, and if you can't, take everything else they love.
The captain noted how the man only answered the part of his question that he wanted to. "Fool," he grumbled under his breath, though he didn't care if the blonde heard him. "And if you can't protect them. What about the lives of everyone else? How many lives are worth your kingdom's future? Who are you willing to risk, Prince of Wolves?" He asked again, more directly and adding a normally playful moniker and making it grim.

Jasper knew his father well enough by now that if push came to shove he would start an all out war. He didn't plan on giving the Lutrians anything. Good Kings weren't built through compromise. But the Prince wanted better. He was supposed to succeed his father meaning it was up to him to lead the country and his people to bigger and better things. That meant he had to find his own way to do things. Not just follow everything his father did to the letter.
Jasper was painfully aware that this could have very well been a practice in futility. Just as much as he was aware he couldn't save everyone. As much as he tried. Being called a fool didn't shake him. He may have said the same to someone with the same ideology. "We have lost more than lives and land and will continue to do so if something isn't attempted." He stated plainly. "I am under no delusion that I can save everyone, as much as I might try, I am one man." The taunting of the usually playful moniker did make him bristle a bit. "A wolf protects and honors his pack."
"What is the worst that could come from talking, hm?" He asked as he shifted in his seat to more directly look at the scout. "We go to war? We're already practically there are we not?" There was a loud crackle from a piece of wood breaking in the fire place and soft embers that sputtered out. "This is not about some fantasy of saving everyones lives and sending all my soldiers home where they can get fat and happy." As much as he would love for that to be the case. There would always be another battle to fight.
"I want to know we did everything we could to make some semblance of peace so if more of my men die it wasn't for nothing." Soldiers signed on knowing what to expect. They put their lives on the line knowing it could be cut short. If Jasper could stop that he would. If he couldn't he wanted them to go knowing their life had meaning. That they'd had a purpose.

Perhaps it would be better if he played along. If he continued to be the simple soldier he made out to be. Of course sometimes he was asked about his past, but even most Manthiran's knew exile wasn't a simple banishment. It came with baggage none of them would ever be allowed to unpack. It affected everything they did, everything they said. Some employers wouldn't take on a man who couldn't explain for what crime they were exiled. Thankfully, most armies didn't have that problem.
But Hunt couldn't sit here and play along. "A lot more," he agreed, focused on the man across from him and hardly noticing the fire. While the captain was glad the Prince had thought about the bigger picture, the arguably more important picture, he hadn't asked about that. "Yes, yes, your plight for peace is laudable," he said, perhaps getting a little carried away with his vocabulary. "Everyone knows your father won't roll over and that direct conflict is inevitable. They'll be keen to see where you stand. But this isn't what I asked."
He leaned back. "You're taking your personal guard?" Whom he assumed the man knew by name despite them rotating. "A diplomat or two? A translator? A handful of advisors and anyone your father has asked to go with you?" Clearly, he was just guessing, but the point still stood. "What are their names? Any of them married? Children? Parents?" He studied the man for a moment, the questions clearly rhetorical and then continued. "These people that would follow you blindly into danger aren't doing it because they expect you to protect or honor them. They are doing it because they trust you have chosen the right path. That as alpha, you will provide. Even if that means they die to do it."
"How many friends are you willing to lose?" He asked again. This was a personal question, but entirely tied to his professional life.

When he began asking about people close to him Jasper gave the man a quizzical look. Though he knew a rhetorical question when he heard one. Hunt didn't care about hearing about the Princes friends he cared about making him think about them. Still it made one corner of his lips curl into a smile though there wasn't real joy behind it. "My position doesn't award me a great many friends." It was lonely at the top. His father had always said having less people to attach to was better in the long run. Less people that could betray you. Less chances for heart break. He'd always assumed that's why the man never bothered even getting very close to his own children.
"The people who are my friends are willing to join me because they know I will provide. They know where I stand and have made the conscious choice to stand beside me." He leaned forward with his elbow with his eyes intent on Hunt. The fire light flickered and danced in his eyes and across his skin. "I am not willing to lose anyone I love though I'm also aware it may happen." One hand flexed into a fist and relaxed. He's already loved and lost enough people.
"But if they want to take the people I love from me they can take them from my bared and bloody teeth."

The captain could nearly feel the cynicism radiate from the man. It didn't suit him, though Hunt imagined he got it from his father. What was that Manthiran saying? That it is lonely at the top of the mountain? Perhaps. Hunt wasn't exactly in a position to judge how many friends the man had considering how few he had himself. Though he did find the use of the word 'award' interesting. Unless he was misunderstanding.
A corner of his lip turned upward in the hint of a smirk. He wasn't trying to ask a trick question. He was simply trying to get the man to think about what he was doing. What he was asking of people. What he would have to ask of everyone daily, especially as King. This answer was at least an answer. And it gave Hunt a lot of insight into what Jasper really wanted of him when he asked for him to join his diplomatic mission.
Jasper didn't want another guard. He wanted someone else he could force to rely on him and look to him as a protector and provider. But Hunt wasn't interested in someone who thought he needed protecting or saving. He wasn't interested in being a martyr either. He leaned back in his chair and glanced at the fire. "You'll make your father proud yet, Your Highness," he said with a sigh. He was perhaps even less interested in joining the man than he had been before and more concerned from how the Prince spoke that the man would get himself killed.

Jasper wouldn't say he was looking for another person to rely on him. If that were the case he would have invited one of his sisters. Or some younger, more naive soldier who only had a vague idea of what they were doing. When he said he'd make his father proud the Prince wasn't so sure. In many ways he was certain his father wouldn't appreciate how sentimental he was. How much he cared about people. It was dangerous.
But Jasper sighed and looked to the fire himself. "I wanted someone I could trust to not just protect me." He admitted in a softer tone. Of course he would have guards but most if anything went down they would be more intent on protecting the Prince. "I'm only one man, I can't look after everyone at once." As much as he would like to. Especially if things did go south. If he was threatened to lose the people he loved. "I am bringing people with me that I care about a great deal and I wanted someone who could also watch them if I couldn't." If his guards got in the way.
His eyes turned back to Hunt. Soft but filled with worry. "You care so much for your men, even the ones who would love nothing more than to see you bleeding out." He grit his teeth and looked down at his hands for a moment. "I need someone like that I could trust to step in if I couldn't."

Hunt had meant more in his aggressive and forceful attitude. In his desire to impose his will and emotions on others. It reminded him of the King.
He shook his head as the man explain3d he wanted his friends protected. More than himself. Coupled with the notion that he would put himself first was disappointing. "You provide for your friends by protecting yourself. If you can't step back and save your own life, you're worth nothing as a Prince," Hunt pointed it out. "You're a symbol just as much as you are a man. Bring more guards if it worries you." Hunt wasn't concerned with anyone besides the Prince.
Though as the topic of his soldiers came up he frowned. The Prince and he were alike in many ways. But he wasn't here for some strangers. He was here for Jasper. He just wasn't sure how to explain that. "If you won't allow your guards to protect you, you only put more people at risk. I won't become a martyr just so you can save a few friends you weren't willing to lose, yet you put at risk." There was a poker analogy there somewhere.

To be told he meant nothing as a Prince if he wouldn't protect himself made Jasper put his hand over his heart as if the words had stabbed him. "You would me." He said sarcastically. He realized he didn't really get to be a person. He was the crowned Prince. People would look to him for guidance. For faith. It wasn't always something he liked to think about but it was his reality.
"If I have someone I know is going to protect the people I care about I can focus on protecting myself." Jasper was a protector. He always would be. He cared for people deeply and he always put them before himself. Which he knew he shouldn't do. But it was difficult. So many others were so worried about keeping him alive they didn't worry about keeping themselves alive. Was it not hypocritical?

Hunt's expression darkened slightly, for just a moment. And then he pushed the feeling away and had the decency to quirk a small, quick smile at the man's sarcasm. Considering what he had just said should have gotten him slapped on the cheek or otherwise reprimanded. Sarcasm or not, taken with some of the other words he had expressed, Hunt felt it was best to cover his bases. He stiffened up a little and cleared his throat. "My apologies, Highness," he said softly.
He didn't feel like saying more on the topic. He had made his intentions clear and if the Prince didn't feel safe, he should bring more guards. If he decided to bring less or risk his own life foolishly like he claimed he would, then it was just another sign to the scout to put his walls up and pull away from the man. He already knew what it was like to be reckless and risk his own life. Being close to someone who would risk his heart for no gain held no positives for Hunt. As much as he might want it, it was best to end things here.
Hunt pushed himself up from the armchair, feeling a bit stiff at first, but pushing through it the first few steps. "I believe it is time I turn in," he said, putting his back to the Prince. He reached up and tugged his shirt off over his head, showing off lean shoulders, a bruised right side and the bandage around his waist. On the back of his right arm was a long wicked slash that ran nearly from his shoulder to his elbow. Otherwise, he was remarkably in one piece. "You want to see me in the morning?" He asked, stretching and finally turning to look at the man. He was aware of what he was doing and he wasn't comfortable with it. But that was the point. The Prince was...different than most people. But even so, Hunt moved with careful study of the other man in the room, even when he wasn't looking at him.
