The scout hardly paid attention to the man beside him. He was glad he didn't try to touch him or attempt to be helpful when it would have only distracted him further. The rest of the cold he hardly noticed, his cloak more than warm enough even against the damp and the rest of his body naturally warming. It made the fact that winter in Taknier was colder almost a laughing matter.
It took more than a few minutes, the captain spending nearly a quarter of an hour focused on the sky or the far wall, wrangling his breathing in slowly but surely. Hunt finally glanced over at the royal bundle of furs next to him, almost surprised to find the man still there. He considered him silently for a moment and then carefully picked himself up.
"Don't know if you're a good omen or an ill one just yet, Prince," he panted. It was a joke. The sound of his voice was still breathy. Clearly he wasn't entirely normal just yet. If he was being honest, he wouldn't be for a day or so. He shifted to Taknieri woth a shake of his head, "Two chances to die today and he ruins both of them."

Jasper sat next to the scout the entire time. Not talking, unwilling to get up and leave him alone. He didn't dare touch him either. Not just because he thought it might be inappropriate but clearly he was focusing on something. Likely his breathing from the sound of it. The Prince's own breathing picked up as well to trembling, shuddering breaths. His teeth chattered softly. The tips of his fingers began going numb. Unlike his Taknieri companion he couldn't warm himself up as easily.
Still, he sat there. Just waiting for Hunt to be okay again. At least okay enough. As the man picked himself off the ground, Jasper forced himself up as well. He tried to not shiver as much from the cold but his whole body trembled slightly. He was going to feel like shit in the morning. "Let me know when you figure it out." He teased with a small chuckle as he put his hands under his arms to try and warm them.
He didn't know much Taknieri but he recognized something to do with dying and ruining. Was he saying he ruined his chances at dying? Jasper snorted softly, but didn't respond. From his understanding the Taknieri people weren't fond of outsiders knowing their language and the Prince didn't want to offend him. "A-Are you feeling a b-bit better?" He tried to keep his voice even but the shivering made that a bit harder.

Hunt shook his head. It was bloody cold out and the man seemed to take some sort of stupid pride in sitting out here next to him. Or maybe it was some form of wayward sympathy and friendship that kept him here. The later was all the more dangerous a thought. Even with his innate ability to regulate his body temperature, the man didn't think it was that cold. He supposed he wore a lot of layers amd wasn't as inclined to notice.
He massaged his throat gently, continuing to breathe slowly. He frowned at the teasing. He supposed he should have expected the man to rise to a joke. He didn't seem the particularly serious sort if he could help it.
The snort made him stop, turning to narrow his eyes at him. Clearly he had understood something of what he said. While Hunt might not be allow in his homeland any longer, he still valued tradition. Clearly the Prince did not if he had sought out someone whining to stoop to teaching him words. The language of Taknier was a sacred bond and source of pride. A signifier of citizenship and proof of dedication. The Prince did not share that.
"I'll be fine. We should go back inside," he said, watching the man shiver and tuck his hand sunder his arms. He imagined ordering the man inside alone would not fly of a number of reasons but he personal found it disrespectful to even consider. Hunt wasn't certain what else the man wanted from him, but he would very much like to sit down and relax to catch his breath. "You can keep the rest of...whatever that was to yourself," he added with a grumble.

Jasper had at one point tried to learn Taknieri, when he was very young. He'd wanted to be able to understand people he was talking to without some sort of translator. But when he realized how disrespectful that idea seemed to be he stopped. It wasn't to say he didn't pick up a few words throughout his travels. The Prince traveled throughout Taknier for years and even when he wasn't trying to be he was annoyingly observant. It only became natural that he picked up a few words here and there.
But he never spoke them to anyone. As much as he may have wanted to he wanted to he knew it was better to keep the knowledge to himself. Most of what he'd learned after all were swears or insults. One or two terms of endearment. He picked up a good bit about death and grief after the Prince died. Even then though he never dared to speak a word. Not even the phrase of respect for the dead he'd heard over and over a thousand times.
The comment to go back inside made him nod. Yes, back inside where it was warm and Jasper could get feeling back in his fingers. He moved with Hunt back inside the tavern and immediately felt the warmth start to sink into his hands. His wet ass was going to have to be a different story. "No crisps for you, I'll remember that." Though his tone was playful he would in fact remember it.

The scout got the door, not anymore comfortable with the damp than the other man. But his ignored it. At the very least, someone should pay for their food and drinks before. Now if only he could convince himself that was why he wanted to be here.
He grimaced. Potatoes and salt weren't the problem but local cooking styles probably were. He didn't typically get very adventurous with his food options. Not to mention most of what he did eat was game or local farm animals that they roasted over a fire. "More for you," he noted instead. H3 hesitated, waiting until Jasper seated himself before also sitting back down again. If this was what the man meant by being normal, hopefully it was what he expected.
He did take another drink, if just to taste something else and rinse his mouth out. He leaned back and folded his arms expectantly. The Prince was the one so eager to converse. Hunt was only here because it would be irresponsible for him to leave the man alone. Not that Jasper couldn't order him to. "What else?"

Jasper was happy to take a seat and let the warmth soak in slowly. Knowing all too well it would soon make his skin start to itch like crazy. But it was fine. He supposed it was current company that made it fine. Not that said company seemed all too enthusiastic to be with him still. The Prince would insist he wasn't holding the man hostage. He could leave whenever he desired. It wasn't as if Hunt was one of his Red Guards or a candidate for his Warden. Not that he thought the man would really want either of those positions.
He took his seat, still shivering a bit, and was happy when Hunt sat with him. Though his question made him chuckle a bit. "Well, you could tell me more about you." He offered before taking a drink from his own ale. "Or I could tell you a bit about myself but I fear that would be rather boring." Not that Jasper was exactly an open book that everyone knew everything about. He just hates talking about himself. "Or we could sit here awkwardly while I look in your eyes until he decide I'm not holding you against your will and leave." He offered a playful smile before popping another crisp in his mouth.
"Your choice."

Unfortunately for Hunt and fortunately for the Prince, Hunt was just as relieved to be indoors and stirring down as the other man. Perhaps not for the cold, but between the debating he had subjected himself to and now his poor reaction to the food, he needed the breather. Which did indeed leave him sitting across from a man he was more and more uncomfortable with.
It wasn't as if the Prince had done anything to him. Even outside, as close as he sat, as much as he had probably itched to place a more comforting hand on his shoulder, he hadn't so much as touched him.
Hunt sighed and pushed his drink a bit away so he could rest his elbows on the the table, relaxing more for his own sake, but he supposed it did indicate some level of acceptance. He shifted his gaze away at the mention of his eyes. Anything but that last one.
"There's not much tell," he said, proving no matter how relaxed he looked, he still maintained the wall between them. Whatever Jasper wanted, he wasn't getting it from Hunt. His social status was useful there. "Exile's don't have a family. We are forbidden of speaking if who or what we were before." Hunt said it softly but there was a bit of venom there. Distaste. "Eight months ago, I traveled to Valur, spent a week drinking and then enlisted as an officer." Like any other commoner. He supposed that didn't help him avoid harassment; most noblemen were officers. To have a commoner rank above them was sure to prickle.
Hunt spoke as if the Prince wasn't aware of that particular bit of Taknieri "law" to do with exile. It was less a law however and more…a compulsion. He was aware this was intended to be a more personal question but Hunt hated assumptions about himself.
So… "I suppose you should tell me about yourself," he said, leaning backward, arms folded over his chest. "Something no one knows about the Prince of Manthir."

If he was being honest Jasper hadn't really expected the scout to just open up. But he also hadn't up and left and was still willing to talk to him. So that was a start at least. Though he was a little saddened when Hunt turned away at the mention of his eyes. He couldn't understand what the problem was. He wanted to ask but kept the question to himself. Clearly that was a touchy subject for him. When asked to talk about himself the Prince wrinkled his nose a bit at the idea.
"Something not publicly known...." He said thoughtfully. It needed to be something easy enough to mention that wasn't too personal. The last thing he needed to admit in a public tavern was that he preferred the company of men. Especially men like Hunt. "I hate dancing." He settled on with a small smile. Jasper was quite the dance partner at any ball or party he'd been too. Plenty young noblewomen clambering to have him take them to the dance floor. And he did dance very well. But he couldn't stand it.
"I also hate the music played at Manthir parties." He admitted with a soft chuckle. At least the music played at noble parties. There had been music he'd heard commoners play that was far more upbeat, thrumming, lively. It didn't feel as stiff and proper.

Even had he wanted to, it wasn't as if he could just talk about his life. Not before, anyway. As for talking about now...he wouldn't claim his life was all that exciting or joyful these days.
Hunt wasn't sure the man's fascination with his eyes. He supposed, just like in Taknier, lighter eye colors were rare here. The Prince wasn't the first person to be intrigued or even attracted to them. But after years of being looked down on and having it treated as a weakness, even when he had worked hard to get around that, it was difficult to push those emotions aside. Besides, he wasn't interested in being stared at. Whether the man was teasing him or flirting, he didn't want to know.
He snorted as the man said he hated dancing. He could believe it. Just because he likely did it a lot and was potentially good at it, didn't mean he had to like it. "I happen to like your dirges," he suggested. Certainly not party music of any kind. "Don't know that I have ever been to a party." Not much to celebrate at the moment. He got the feeling the Prince found a lot of his routine and privileged life too stiff and confined. Seeing as he had ordered away his guards to be here.

"I'll have to throw one just so you can come." He responded when Hunt claimed he hadn't been to a Manthir party. "Misery does love company." Which he supposed was evident to why he was so drawn to the scout. Clearly the man was unhappy, and the Prince didn't blame him. There weren't currently many things to celebrate. Or many reasons for parties and dancing.
"I suppose the party will have to wait until I return home again though." Jasper had almost gathered everything he needed to go to Lutra. Soon enough he'd be telling his father that he was off and leaving the home he'd just returned to. Not that he minded. At least when he was away from home there were less expectations. Fewer prying eyes to judge his every move.

Hunt frowned. The mere idea that the Prince might throw a party just for him was almost laughable. He didn't think for a moment such a thing would happen. Though the note of misery loving company struck a bit deeper. He grunted. Was that why the man wouldn't leave him alone? He looked like some miserable puppy to him? That said, the Prince seemed less and less happy himself.
He glanced over at the hint of him leaving. The man had just returned from abroad. Odd, especially when they were essentially at war. He wanted to ask where the man was going this time, but he held his tongue on the topic. "I'm not interested in a party," he said. "Music and dancing aside, someone like me with a personal invitation from the Prince sounds like a death sentence." Perhaps not physically though, otherwise he might find that more appealing. The idea of so many nobles, potentially from Taknier as well...he was actively uninterested.

Jasper didn't actually have a plan to throw a party. That wasn't really his kind of thing anyway. Too many people. Too many fake smiles. Too much boasting and out right lying. All to earn the favor of him or his father or one of his sisters. The Prince didn't find parties interesting in the slightest. Well, at least he didn't anymore. When he'd been younger things had been different. Talking about hideous fashion choices with his sisters. Sneaking off with his lover to share some secret kisses on the garden. Talking about various scandals of married noble men flirting with the younger noblewomen.
Even the Taknieri parties had at least had good food. Though those all felt a bit more tense. At least being a visiting royal. Though sometimes he was able to have some privacy afterwards with the late Prince to laugh and talk about things as well. But they hadn't been the same in quite a while. And they certainly weren't fun anymore. Not that there was much of a reason to celebrate at the moment.
Hunt claiming he wasn't interested in parties made him chuckle softly. "Neither am I, that's why it's such a good idea." Did that make sense? No not really. But that was the fun in it. "So, what do you do for fun then?" He asked before taking a drink from his ale.

Hunt just looked at him, slowly raising one eyebrow. That didn't make any sense. Wait. The Prince really was flirting with him, wasn't he? For the love of the four Cardinal directions, how was this happening right now? How had the man picked him out of all the people? Why had he stayed for that training session? Why was he so compelled to accompany the man after he ditched his guards?
If he was being honest with himself, he was a glutton for self-punishment. Deserved or otherwise. Uncomfortable as he might be, he had allowed this to happen. Wanted it to, maybe.
"I think you have me confused with someone who does things for fun," he said a bit more sharply, leaned back in the booth. The snappy reply indicated he had the capacity to be a lot more witty and conversational if he wanted to, but he simply didn't want to. Forming attachments, or letting others form them with him, was largely undesirable. "I'm a soldier. I fight for a living and get drunk for fun," he said, though the words sounded more like he was borrowing them from someone else.

Jasper wouldn't consider himself flirting. Though he might be able to see how it could be misconstrued that way. But as far as he was concerned the Prince was just being friendly. This was how people made friends right? He'd invited him out to drinks, asked him questions, was trying to get to know him. That wasn't to say he didn't find the scout attractive. Or that there wasn't a nagging voice in the back of his mind wondering how soft his lips were. But he still wouldn't say he was flirting.
It was a bit confusing though. Jasper had given the man multiple options to leave. Even now if he decided to get up and go the Prince wouldn't stop him. But he stayed. Maybe from some strange sense of obligation. Maybe he was simply a glutton for his own kind of punishment. Or maybe he was as lonely as the Prince was. Even as he seemed uninterested in having a real conversation with him. Though the comment of him being a soldier made the Prince chuckle.
"I've been around enough soldiers to know that they do more than fighting and drinking for fun." Though perhaps the other things knew they did for fun wasn't very appropriate for polite conversation.

Hunt was beginning to realize he was giving off the wrong message by staying here, even feigning disinterest and poor conversation. He refused to be friends with the Prince. That was not at all how this would go. 'Polite acquaintances' seemed like a name place to stop and put that wall up. No matter how civil he might be, this was a moral obligation. Not one borne of friendship. It was lonely at the top and as far as Hunt was concerned, Jasper would have to get used to it.
Maybe that was a bit cold, but it was true.
Still, he couldn't help himself. The man was...annoying charming. And funny. And caring. Now if he would just stop staring at his mouth so intently, Hunt might manage to at least pretend to be more comfortable. "And whoring. I do a lot of that," he added nearly before the man finished his sentence and clearly following exactly where he was going with it. He kept his tone flat, no hint of a smile on his lips or eyes. This too was an obligation. A front. He even managed to direct his attention to one of the serving girls for greater affect, anything he could to make it clear he wasn't interested. Even if he wanted to be.
