Name: Harlan Rost Face Claim: Daniel Craig Age: 52 Birth Season: Summer Physical Description: Harlan is not a very tall man at 5' 10" but what he lacks in stature he makes up for in his regal and commanding presence. He has a piercing blue gaze that suggests he sees everything. When not in public, he always has a bit of a frown about him, as if displeased with the world.
Family:
Dietrich Rost(eldest brother), Older Sister - OPEN, Younger Brother - OPEN
Queen Consort - OPEN
Bastard Children (2-3?)
Rank: King Occupation: Royalty Home: Draufgänger Palace, Manthir Combat Experience: Trained in general self defense and combat, Harlan spent as much time with a sword in his hands as he could. Not to say that is very much time, considering a crown prince has many other duties and skills to master. Although capable of standing toe to toe with most warriors, he is no champion, especially in his older age. The claymore is his weapon of choice.
Education: Along with a plethora of the best private tutors, Harlan, like most Manthiran noblemen, was educated in Taknier. He spent five years abroad there and another two traveling the world to visit other kingdoms. He is well versed in history and culture and politics, but knows little of religion. He is not skilled in any trade. He speaks Imperial and Southern. Magic: Harlan has a rudimentary skill with Chameleon Skin alteration. As a royal, he can in fact control the color of his hair as well, but beyond the skill needed to control the ability from letting his mood affect it, he doesn't put either ability into practice very often.
Personality:
Harlan is known to be a rather course individual. Some say it is due to his life as a spoiled royal, others his time spent soldiering while a Prince.
Although strict and distant, he is a very caring father, very protective of his immediate family even if he is not always around. After he took the throne, he grew much more distant from his own siblings, largely from the military campaigns he led. He is far from a recluse, however, entertaining at the palace often when not on campaign.
He is proud, outgoing, confident sometimes to the point of arrogance, ambitious, and intimidating. He's a no nonsense sort who likes to get to the point and demands the respect he is due. In the right company, he can be much more understanding but much like the massive tree that is the Manthiran throne room, while he might bend a little, he does not break.
He is particularly occupied at the moment with the border dispute in the north, the lack of recent official news from Taknier, and ensuring his children are matched appropriately.
History: Harlan was not born to be king. Until he was thirteen, he had a brash and daring older brother. The story of the late prince is quite well known:
It is more than rumored that young Dietrich (15 at the time) fell in love with a noblewoman. While this was all well and good, the prince was already betrothed to another daughter of a noble family. The King refused to null this contract and anger the other family. It was expected that the crown prince would come to his senses eventually. Instead, however, he eloped with the love of his life. This stirring tale of love does not bear a happy ending, however. Of course, the King sent the Red Guard to collect his son, but the young man proved too slippery for his own good. A few months later, the prince came crawling back to the capital, his lover having died in childbirth and his daughter along with her. Although grateful to have him return, the prince was no longer the same. When the older brother of his lover confronted him and blamed him for the death of his sister, Dietrich admitted it was his fault and demanded the other noble challenge him to a duel. Although somewhat archaic, the nobleman could not refuse the prince so the pair fought. Dietrich fought hard but was eventually beaten, though he refused to concede, forcing the noble to kill him or be killed.
And so, Harlan officially became the heir. Of course, the young prince received a very similar education as his brother, fencing, strategy, politics, etiquette, history, reading, writing, how to listen to people and talk to people and know what they needed and how to command. As much as his favorite parts were those pertaining to battle, he was often jealous of his brother's inheritance. While Dietrich's death was painful on a personal level, Harlan never let it bother him much; he had a kingdom to take over one day, and he hadn't had to murder his brother to do it. It was a blessing, in some ways.
Although attached to all his siblings, none of them were every very close once they reached the age of young adults. Even the girls were educated on many topics to ensure they could make witty and smart conversation and defend themselves. They were not permitted to join the military and all of the princes and princesses were betrothed from a young age. Harlan was no exception.
He grew up playing with his Queen Consort to be, though at the time she was not expected to become queen. He married her when he turned 18 and they have had three children. Whether there is any love there besides a shared childhood, it is hard to know. What is not hard to know is that Harlan entertained quite a few whores. Although he kept quite a good handle on it for many years (not to his wife, she found out rather quickly) after one of them announced she had been raising his child, he was forced pay quite a lot to keep her quiet and ensure the rumors were just rumors.
In his younger years, he spent seven of them abroad, five being educated in Taknier in both combat and the mind, and another two traveling the world. He was quick to return home when news reached him that his father was ill, and it was not a year after Harlan was married that he took over as sovereign of Manthir.
And that was when the conquests began. Long story short, Harlan is responsible for the inclusion of the islands to the south into the kingdom and for pushing further north along the river and into the mountains, taking over what was theoretically unclaimed land that the Lutrians roamed. Such campaigns made him a lot of friends of nobility, not so many of the common folk, enemies of the Lutrians, and respected but non-allied neighbors to the southwest.
He has since worked to push the borders to the west though this is slower going by civil unrest brought on by long winters the last decade and lots of disputes between nobility.
